Because It's Almost October

Due to the fact that it is almost October, I'd like to share a personal experience from my job in South Dakota. At Mt.Rushmore KOA I was the Activities Director, therefore I was in charge of creating, implementing and managing new programs and events. My boss and I sat down one day and tried to think of a new way to incorporate a program idea with the 1940 tractor we used for hay rides during the day, into something we can do at nights on Monday and Thursday. Through lots of joking and silly ideas, we thought of a spooky hay ride, to where people would pay $1 for a glow stick necklace and they would be able to ride a spooky hay ride throughout the campsite. We first had to ensure that we had the staff available for this to be pulled off successfully, then we had to think of a story. The story we thought of used some true history of Palmer Gulch, Mt. Rushmore KOA and some made up details about three brothers who got revenge on a family who took all their money and fled to South Dakota. The three brothers are the ones who were haunting the camp and thats who we had the families look for, while we added some things about them burning down the house, and the wife of the man who robbed these brothers was still sitting on a rocking chair of where her porch used to be. I think that the staff was really into it which made it something we looked forward to doing and the families who were on the ride always seemed to jump at least once, so it was pretty successful. Though we had some trial and error in the beginning of this program, it seemed to be something that they will use for years to come. Another measure of success is the fact that we always had a line that went for about 150 yards, and we had to stop before getting everyone on the ride because it was gettign close to midnight when we stopped. Halloween is one of my favorite times for Recreation because there are so many ways to be creative and allow families to come out and have fun. Make sure to follow my blog if your from the high country because I will be posting more about Halloween opportunities in Blowing Rock.
